Fiddlehead Instructor (Part-Time through June) 

Full-time July/August

 

At Fiddlehead Center for the Arts in Scarborough, we have created a nurturing space where children are inspired to be scientists, artists and historians. We integrate all the STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) to inspire and create.  

 

Ideal candidates have experience leading science forward project based learning with groups of elementary aged children, are comfortable supporting K-5th through small groups and individual instruction and enjoy working outdoors. Must have a love for the sciences, be creative, responsible and kind. We are seeking someone to join our team a couple afternoons a week (3-6pm) through the end of the school year and be open to full time M-F for our busy camp season. This is a temporary position that may lead to permanent status.  


 

After School Enrichment Instruction:

  • Curriculum development for classes you lead, ideally a Science focus 1-2 times per week (coordinate with co-instructors around monthly themes)

  • Theme integration (work with other instructors to integrate STEAM aligned lessons for each monthly theme)

  • Prep for classes (helping with project prep, support ideas/planning, classroom set-up/clean-up)

  • Teach, support and care for students individually and in groups

  • Maintain a positive, inclusive and caring learning place for students and staff

  • Assist with sending completed projects home with students 

  • Keep track of the functionality/availability of materials and supplies in the classroom 

  • Research resources for class ideas, videos, books to overall benefit Fiddlehead or for classes

  • Document: Take photos during classes for marketing, fundraising, and communication

  • School Break/Camp planning-curriculum development and instruction

  • Create supply lists and wish lists

  • Take Attendance

  • Talk with parents about children’s success and challenges


 

Summer Camp Instructor:

  • Greet families and help campers transition to camp

  • Support start of day meeting

  • Prepare and support camp day projects

  • Lead small group learning during choice time

  • Supervise children (ages 5-10) during free-time, lunch and snack times

  • Cleaning duties; after camp cleanup; rotating duties with other staff to do primary jobs such as vacuuming, recycling/trash, table washing,daily dish washing and bathroom cleaning. Weekly Cleanup; dusting, fridge check/clean, microwave, toaster oven, windows, music rooms, lobby etc. 

  • Support end of day dismissal and pick up procedures


 

Qualifications:

  1. Relevant bachelor’s degree, or equivalent knowledge, experience and skills 

  2. Experience working with children individually and in group settings 

  3. Practiced presentation and training facilitation skills

  4. Understand and be committed to issues of diversity

  5. Able to comfortably sit or kneel on the floor with kids, lift up to 40lbs, run and play

  6. Excellent listening, writing, and oral communication skills 

  7. Self-motivated, able to work with limited supervision

  8. Ability to research, develop and work collaboratively to develop Child-focused, STEAM programming

  9. Comfortable with technology, including: Apple, Google suite

  10. Possession of a valid and active Maine driver’s license, a reliable vehicle, and adequate insurance, or access to reliable and consistent transportation

 

 


Pay rate: $20-21 hourly

 

2-3 afternoons per week (3:30-6pm), increasing during school breaks and summer. 

 

Non-exempt/At-will employee
