Welcome... Andy Happel

Fiddlehead’s newest music instructor!

Accomplished composer and producer. Electrifying performer and instrumentalist. There are many labels and many titles to bestow upon Andy Happel, but most know him simply as the guy who plays searing violin.

“It’s all about moments,” says Happel. “Every aspect of my musical life is connected by the search for moments that are moving. There is no other feeling in the world than being touched by music, and that can’t happen all the time. So the pursuit of those moments, whether it’s listening to a record, going to see a show, performing live, working in the studio or teaching, is pervasive.”

Long considered a prolific songwriter, Happel is also a celebrated music producer, arranger and session player with a long resume of commercial and commissioned work under his belt. This includes symphonic compositions, TV and radio commercials and string arrangements (full discography and production credits at www.andyhappel.com). Happel also enjoys playing fiddle and touring with the Don Campbell Band. “Violin is the center piece of this record,” says Happel, who is renowned for his fiery performances on his electric blue fiddle.

Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Happel began playing violin at the age of five. He studied composition at University of New Hampshire, where he formed rock band Thanks to Gravity who released six CDs over the span of its career and toured extensively. In 1995, Happel composed a symphonic work that was premiered by the New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra and was profiled on National Public Radio.

Andy is available to teach violin, viola, cello, piano or guitar with us here at Fiddlehead. Please visit www.andyhappel.com

Fiddlehead Center for the Arts is now accepting registrations for its original new early education program, FiddleStarts. Based on a world-renowned educational approach called Reggio Emilia, the program is available for three- to five-year-olds, either two, three or five days a week. It will emphasize the arts and communication and will feature music, movement, work with clay and an introduction to the Spanish language.

Reggio Emilia is a small city in northern Italy that's about the size of Portland. As they recovered from the WWII devastation to their town, its people decided to build infant-toddler centers that emphasized a stimulating environment and a focus on art and group projects. That pioneering program has since expanded beyond Italy's borders and there are now Reggio Emilia-inspired schools in 27 U.S. states, including Maine.

So what is it that makes the program so compelling? Reggio Emilia educators summarize it with the following principles:

  • Emergent Curriculum, in which topics for study are captured from the children's interests and conversations, or through community and family events.
  • Project Work that is derived from concepts, ideas and interests that emerge from the group.
  • Representational Development, in which the arts are important tools for cognitive, linguistic and social development.
  • Collaborative Work with small or large groups of children.
  • Teachers as Researchers, in which teachers become learners alongside the children.
  • Documentation of children engaged in experiences; their words captured through visual media as they discuss what they are doing, feeling and thinking.
  • The Environment is considered the "third teacher" and teachers creatively organize space for small and large group projects.

In a classroom that uses the Reggio approach, children can explore a subject without time limits, which allows for deep thinking.. Although the teacher will provide direction if necessary, the children can determine the direction of each day's learning. The curriculum is flexible and readily adapted to the children's ideas and interests.

For example, in a traditional classroom, the teacher would take the lead on an art project-probably the same project that had been undertaken at the same time each prior year. However, in a Reggio Emilia-inspired classroom, each day of each year can be completely different. If the children express excitement about dinosaurs, they could take the lead on the construction of a dinosaur sculpture, with the research, measurement and design executed by them with their teacher's guidance.

Janai Bernolz will be leading FiddleStarts at Fiddlehead Center for the Arts starting in September of this year. The program runs for nine months and classes are Monday through Friday for children four and five, and Tuesday and Thursday for three year olds. Parents can decide to enroll their children in morning or afternoon classes, two, three or five days a week. Fees vary depending upon the number of days a child is enrolled.

Scheduling, Tuition and Fees for FiddleStArts 2009-2010
